Citizen Science Workshop: Living Shoreline Project

Saturday, Aug 15, 2020 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Location: Center for Citizen Science

Category: Community

ORCA has created nine living shorelines in Indian River County along Indian River Land Trust properties, which require quarterly monitoring. Living shorelines usually include the construction of a hard structure or breakwater made from rock or bagged shell and the planting of native vegetation along intertidal shorelines.

Citizen Scientists are trained to follow protocol for monitoring these breakwaters and shorelines, as well as how to compile, analyze and report data to ORCA. Most of ORCA’s Living Shorelines require a boat for monitoring.

Volunteers will start the morning off at ORCA’s Center for Citizen Science learning about the project and will then head out to Toni Robinson Waterfront Trail for field sampling training.
