Sunshine Physical Therapy in Vero Beach Florida

In the late 1940’s, a small group of people saw the need to help the physically challenged in our community. They became the nucleus for a larger group of humanitarians, establishing the Sunshine Center of Indian River County in 1953. A year later, the Center was incorporated as a non-profit organization.

The Center’s first home was donated by W. C. Graves, Jr. and moved to the 17th Avenue location. In 1959, the Center directed its activities toward physical therapy and rehabilitation. The name was changed to The Sunshine Rehabilitation Center of Indian River County, Inc. In 1979, the Board of Directors voted to emphasize primary services by using the operational title of the Sunshine Physical Therapy Clinic and planned to expand facilities.

Ground was broken for a new building in 1980, and in the summer of 1981, the Clinic moved to its new home at the same address on 17th Avenue. The Clinic expanded in 1994 with the addition of a gym and fitness area.

Various sources of revenue have funded operations and have included: fee for services, the county government, the Easter Seal Society, and the United Way. As a Medicare approved facility, the Clinic is now independent of all outside sources of revenue, depending upon fees for services, donations, and endowments to fund operations.

Staff from the Clinic is available for regular seminars to the community covering health-related topics including Preventing Back Injuries, Fall Prevention, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Osteoporosis, and Living with Arthritis.

Through the years, the Board of Directors, the staff, and the patients have been indebted to those humanitarians who, through their donations and endowments, have become a part of the Clinic’s history.

Available Therapies & Education

PHYSICAL THERAPY: Hands-on care from licensed professionals, specializing in orthopedics, sports medicine, neuro-muscular diagnoses, neurological diagnoses and balance and vestibular disorders. Initial evaluation includes a review of medical history, and assessment of problems related to the diagnosis, including deficits in range of motion, strength, postural control, balance, gait and functional status.

OCCUPATIONAL/HAND THERAPY: Specializing in rehabilitation of hand injuries, including custom splinting, exercise and activities of daily living training. Comprehensive evaluation and treatment of diagnoses such as carpal tunnel syndrome, fractures, tendonitis, and tendon lacerations and repairs.

SPEECH THERAPY: Evaluation and treatment of speech and swallowing disorders due to head injury, stroke, throat cancer or neurological diseases, including Parkinson’s Disease. Includes Vital Stim(R) Therapy for swallowing disorders and LSVT LOUD treatment for Neurological conditions.

Sunshine Physical Therapy Clinic accepts all major Insurances, including Medicare, Workman’s Compensation, Blue Cross/Blue Shield and CIGNA.

PERSONAL FITNESS PROGRAM: Exercise for your health in our well – equipped gym. The Fitness Program is available to former patients and the general public, with individualized programs based upon your goals.

Levels of Participation:

1. INDEPENDENT – work-out on your own following initial assessment of current status and instruction in proper use of equipment.

2. ASSISTED – supervised exercise programs for those participants requiring minimal physical assistance for safe performance of their program.

3. PERSONAL TRAINING – work one-on-one with a qualified staff member, focusing on individual goals for flexibility, strength and endurance.

MASSAGE THERAPY: Licensed Massage Therapists provide therapeutic and rehabilitative massage therapy. Massage aids in stress reduction and pain management, and improves circulation for overall health. Hours are by appointment in one-half and one hour increments, with flexible schedules available.

WORK SAFETY PROGRAM: Ergonomic consultation available to reduce employee injury risk. Includes on-site assessment and recommendations to improve employee safety. Reduce employee injury rate through our Pre-employment (post-offer) Back Screens which focus on body mechanics and proper lifting.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION: Seminars are available on a variety of health-related topics in the clinic on a regular basis, and also available for your work, group, or organization.
