Home of the Lorton Nature Trail. Named for Aloa Lorton a retired Pelican Island teacher who first conceived the idea of making trails through the acreage around the school. With the help of family and friends, Mrs. Lorton began her work on the trail in 1982-83 (when the school first opened). The trail has since evolved into an important outdoor classroom used not only by the students from Pelican Island and the local high school but also by members of the community for the purposes of studying and enjoying the scrub habitat.

GMS offers a gateway to your child’s future. Through the innovative STEM initiative that stands for science, technology, engineering and math, students in Project Lead the Way classes learn by doing high level science to solve problems. GMS students score above state average on science assessments at 57% proficiency, and have a 100% passage rate in geometry which allows students go on to excel in careers and college. An example of this exciting learning opportunity is happening this semester. GMS 6th graders are extracting  their own DNA, doing dissections of sheeps’  brains and completing a virtual autopsy.

The building of a school in a greener fashion is new to our District, and the school is very excited and proud to be a part of it. The school’s Community Advisory Committee developed founding ideas for Storm Grove Middle School. These ideas were built upon the environmental aspects of the school and on today’s need for conscientious living within the natural world.
