First Ladies and Their Presidents features two one-act plays: one about Abigail & John Adams and the other about Your & Henry Hoover.

While many know of John Adams’ role as one of the Founding Fathers and the second president of America, few know much about Abigail’s contributions or realize the great sacrifices they made as husband and wife, and as parents, to help give birth to this nation. Our first play invites you to travel back in time and imagine you are among a group of citizens who have assembled at the Adams home for a very somber occasion.

Is your first reaction to hearing of Herbert and Lou Hoover, “Didn’t Herbert Hoover cause the depression?” or “Who is Lou Hoover?” We invite you to be surprised as you learn of the unique accomplishments of both. Did you know, for instance, that First Lady Lou Hoover served as President of the Girl Scouts twice and as an officer over many years? Their story is one of love, partnership, and national and international good works and respect.

Presidents and Their First Ladies, dramatically speaking is the creation of William and Sue Wills, a veteran husband-and-wife writing and acting team. They’ve spent 44 years in theater, have presented over 9,000 performances together, and are in their 26th year of bringing to life the stories of 34 different Presidential couples. One patron exclaimed, “Congress should declare them a living national monument.”   AAUW Vero Beach brings you two of this couple’s performances on Presidents’ Day weekend – Sunday, February 20, 2022, from 3–5 pm at the Emerson Center, 1590 27th Avenue, Vero Beach.
