Location: Indian River State College

Category: Community

Step back in time at the home of Laura (Riding) Jackson, an American poet, critic, novelist, essayist and short story writer.

The historic Laura (Riding) Jackson home is open FREE to the public from November through April with docent-led tours between 1pm and 5pm on Tuesdays and the second Sunday. (If planning to visit with a group of 9 or more, please reserve in advance.)

Built circa 1910, this home is a classic example of Florida’s “cracker” style of architecture with deep porches and large windows designed for cross-ventilation. The oldest section is crafted from Florida pine and highlights the simplicity of the era. The Jacksons later added a bedroom and bath, along with indoor plumbing.

Until 1989, Laura lived in the house without electricity using propane for cooking and kerosene for light & heat.
