Mental Health Awareness Brown Bag Lecture

Wednesday, May 15, 2019 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Location: IRSC Kight Center for Emerging Technologies

Category: Lectures

Suncoast Mental Health Center (SMHC) has once again partnered with Indian River State College (IRSC) Health and Wellness to raise awareness about the connection between physical and mental health. In its fifth year, the Mental Health Awareness Brown Bag Lecture is a free, community-wide event designed to raise awareness of mental illnesses, their occurrences here on the Treasure Coast, and what resources are available to students, staff, residents and others.

Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May in the United States since 1949. In 2014, SMHC began offering education and awareness events to the community in an effort to break down stigma surrounding mental illnesses, while raising public knowledge of current trends. With decreased stigma, access to mental health care is increased.

So much of what we do physically impacts us mentally. This year we will be exploring the topics of spirituality, humor, animal companionship, work-life balance, and recreation and social connections as ways to boost mental health and general wellness.
Designed to be held during a lunch hour, attendees of the Brown Bag Lecture are encouraged to bring their lunch and stay for the entire period, or during any portions of the lectures that they are able to, on Wednesday, May 15th, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at IRSC Kight Center for Emerging Technologies on IRSC’s main campus in Fort Pierce.

SMHC is a 501©(3) non-profit organization that has been serving the behavioral and mental health needs of children, adults and their families on the Treasure Coast for over 20 years. With offices in St. Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee and Indian River, SMHC offers psychiatric services, counseling, case management, family benefits, education and outreach at their Joint Commission accredited facilities, Treasure Coast-wide.
Accommodations will be made for those who may need them. For more information on this event, contact Tiara Weethee by calling (772) 291-3210 or sending an email to tweethee@smhcinc.org.
