Atlantic Classical Orchestra Returns to the VBMA

Event Dates: 01-19-2025 to 03-16-2025

This year’s series features a piano trio, a string quartet, and a brass quintet, offering guests variety in both musical performance and genre.

Three 3:00 p.m. performances comprise this year’s series—one in January, one in February, and one in March. Series tickets are $90 per VBMA member/ACO subscriber and $105 per non-member. Tickets for individual concerts are also available. Tickets include gallery admission, so come early to take in the exhibitions.

Sunday, January 19: Café Music

The ACO Piano Trio explores ways in which popular and folk traditions inform classical music. Paul Schoenfield’s sparkling Café Music anchors the program with its pan-stylistic embrace of a kaleidoscope of influences from classical masters and Viennese waltzes to Jewish folk songs, jazz, and Broadway. Debussy’s beloved piano trio opens this lovely and entertaining program.

Sunday, February 16: Follow the Lieder

The ACO String Quartet focuses on Schubert’s masterful Death and the Maiden quartet, written after Schubert fell ill. Confronted by death, he mined his own song, Death and the Maiden, written years earlier, for material. The quartet is filled with pathos, startling beauty, and bristling energy.

Sunday, March 16: Top Brass

The ACO Brass Quintet returns with a range of music both written and arranged for brass. A suite from Leonard Bernstein’s indelible West Side Story showcases the full range of expression, lyricism, and power of this virtuoso ensemble. Original brass quintet works by Canadian composer Morley Calvert and American composer Bernhard Heiden round out the program.
