Hibiscus and Community Keeping Children Safe
04-29-2025Each April, we observe Child Abuse Prevention Month—a time to bring communities together in raising awareness about child abuse and neglect, promoting prevention efforts, and recognizing the importance of supporting families. Countless individuals, businesses, and organizations are working every day to change the tragic outcomes of child abuse. At Hibiscus Children’s Center, we’ve been part of this vital mission for over 40 years, helping children move from crisis to hope—hand in hand with our generous and compassionate community.
Since opening in 1985, Hibiscus Children’s Center has been a safe haven for abused, abandoned, and neglected children across the Treasure Coast. Through our Tilton Family Children’s Shelter in Jensen Beach and Hibiscus Village in Vero Beach, we’ve provided over 475,000 safe nights of care to children in need. Through programs like Career Pathways to Independence, we equip youth with real-world skills and opportunities in areas like graphic design and culinary arts. Our Supporting Families in Crisis and SafeCare Programs offer essential prevention services and assist families in crisis. Mental Health Services provide professional counseling and specialized trauma treatment to both children in our care and those in our community. Each year, we’re honored to serve more than 1,600 children and families through our programs.
Behind every statistic is a story—like Joshua’s. When Joshua, a high school senior in foster care, came to Hibiscus Village, he was unsure of what his future held. But with the guidance of our team and the support of our career training program, he discovered a path forward. He applied to college, secured housing assistance, and received a scholarship. Today, Joshua is not only a college student—he’s an inspiring example of what’s possible when we believe in and invest in our youth.
