Hibiscus Remembers A Legacy of Love and Hope: Honoring Norman and Betty Gene Hensick
07-23-2025Leaving a legacy means shaping the future and ensuring your values live on. That’s exactly what Norman and Betty Gene Hensick did for vulnerable youth at Hibiscus Village.
We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Norman Hensick, a devoted member of the Hibiscus Family. He and his late wife, Betty Gene, were instrumental to the Hibiscus mission since 2000 when they visited the Tilton Family Children’s Shelter in Jensen Beach. After learning of Hibiscus’ plans to expand services for teens, the Hensicks felt compelled to help. As Norman said, “Every child deserves a safe childhood with good values and the opportunity to grow up happy and strong and with a good feeling about yourself and what you can accomplish in life.” Betty Gene added, “We have to do something to help the children.”
And they did. The Hensicks donated 4.3 acres of land in Vero Beach to build Hibiscus Village which opened its doors to youth in 2004. Norman, a general contractor, also helped secure labor and materials at cost. They never sought recognition—only the chance to make a difference.
Their extraordinary gift laid the foundation for a thriving center that has served hundreds of teens for over 20 years with safe haven, trauma-informed care, education, and job training. Today, Hibiscus Village continues to honor their legacy through programs like Career Pathways to Independence, Graphic Design Impact Center, Culinary, and the Academic Achievement Center, where youth are encouraged to get their high school diploma or GED. Each service is designed to empower youth and build brighter futures. Youth also receive professional mental health counseling and all Hibiscus staff are trained in the Sanctuary Model, a trauma-informed care approach that promotes healing and safety.
All of this is possible because of the Hensicks’ philanthropic spirit. Their generosity lives on in every young life changed – just last year 82 youth were served with 91% improving the number of school assignments completed, 21 students participated in Writing Club, and 94% of youth identified post-graduation opportunities. This is the Hensicks’ Legacy. A priceless reminder to each youth that they are valued, cared for, and capable of success and happiness—the very dream Norman held for every child.
