Time is Running Out—James Prosek: At Work Exhibition at Vero Beach Museum of Art Open Only Through October 25

Artist returns to Vero Beach on October 24 for a nature walk and sketching workshop.

There are just a few weeks left to see the work of artist-naturalist James Prosek at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA), before the exhibition draws to a close on Sunday, October 25. This compilation of work celebrates the major projects that have shaped his first three decades of practice through more than 70 artworks–all made since the early 2000s.

Based in Easton, Connecticut, Prosek (b. 1975) carries forward the New England tradition of the artist-naturalist, in dialogue with figures such as John James Audubon and Charles Burchfield, while reconsidering how we observe and classify the natural world. His approach also engages the documentary impulses of naturalists like Carl Linnaeus and Charles Darwin, who sought to bring order to nature’s complexity.

This is Prosek’s second show at the Vero Beach Museum of Art. More than a decade ago, in 2015, the Museum presented selections from his celebrated Ocean Fishes series, including highly detailed paintings on paper depicting species such as the Atlantic Bonito and King Mackarel.

On Saturday, October 24, you can join Prosek for the workshop Nature Walk and Sketch with Artist James Prosek, in a unique outdoor exploration of the natural world. Registered participants will meet at Toni Robinson Waterfront Trail, to observe native plants, animals, and other elements of the landscape. Following a walk, the group will sit to sketch and discuss the role of close observation in art making inspired by Prosek’s practice. Space is limited. This exhibition is organized by the Morris Museum, Morristown, New Jersey, and features new interpretive texts authored by VBMA. Support of the exhibit is provided by Barry and Jennifer Jaruzelski and the Martin Guitar Charitable Foundation.

Vero Beach Museum of Art is located at 3001 Riverside Park Drive and is open Monday through Sunday. Docent-led tours of the exhibition are offered daily at 2 p.m. (except the second Saturday each month) and are free with Museum admission. On the Second Saturday of each month, the Museum offers free admission all day.
