Not everyone has a pet or pets in their retirement years, but it is safe to say that many of us do and that we will go to any lengths to protect our fur babies from harm.  Prepare a list of pet-friendly evacuation sites ahead of time so if a disaster does strike, you are one step ahead of the game.  The following is a pet preparedness checklist for disaster, but may not be all-inclusive for your pet, so add to it as needed.

Two-Week supply of Food, Water, and Medications, packed and ready to grab:

  • Food in waterproof containers.  If cans, may need manual can opener
  • Clean water
  • Food and water bowls
  • Medication, along with instructions, in the event someone else cares for your pet

Two-Weeks-worth of other supplies:

  • Copies of the following in a waterproof container:
    • Vaccinations
    • Medical records
    • Rabies certificate
    • Medication prescriptions
    • For cats – most recent FeLV/FIV (feline leukemia and immunodeficiency virus)
    • Registration information (proof of ownership)
    • Pet description(s) and photo(s).  Good to include one of you with them, as well
    • Microchip information
    • Your contact information
    • Emotional support documentation, if pertinent

Two-Weeks-worth of other supplies:

  • Collar with secure ID tag (pet name, your name and contact info)
  • Pet rescue sticker for a prominent window or door in your home
  • Pet first aid kit with bandages, non-adhesive dressings, sticky tape, self-absorbent gauze, blunt scissors, thick towel, etc. (you can purchase or Google to make one of your own)
  • Doggie poop bags
  • Litter box and litter for cats
  • Pet carrier
  • Extra leash and collar with ID, if possible
  • Familiar blankets and/or items with their or your scent
  • Their familiar pet toys to help with anxiety and stress
  • Cleaning supplies (plastic bags, disinfectant, paper towels, etc.)
