It’s easy to find the negative stats about relapse and overdose after alcohol rehab or drug rehab. Positive recovery statistics, however, are readily available too—and they’re inspiring. Instead of focusing only on the challenges ahead, staying hopeful about the future is the wisest way to approach addiction recovery.
Addiction Is Treatable
Addiction and alcoholism are diseases. Research-based methods like those used in holistic rehab help people stop using, manage the disease, and resume productive lives.
Rehab isn’t magic, but it is the right start to sobriety and lifelong recovery. Combining holistic rehab with other therapies simultaneously, like cognitive behavioral therapy or art therapy, often creates a greater level of success.
Relapse Doesn’t Mean Failure
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) compares drug addiction relapse (40-60%) to other chronic diseases, like diabetes and hypertension, which have, respectively, relapse rates of 30-50% and 50-70%. Other notable stats about recovery from the NIDA:
Three of 10 addicts who attended a rehab program stayed sober for at least one year afterward.
Treatment programs have helped over 750,000 Americans to begin recovery.
Close to 17% of addicts who attend outpatient rehabilitation can abstain from relapsing for a year or more.
Hope for the Future
In 2018, drug overdose deaths in the U.S. dropped 5.1%, the first time this statistic has lowered since the 1990s. And after one year, individuals who completed a standard 30-day inpatient treatment program had a 55% success rate, according to a University of Southern California study. The success rate rose to 84% for those in treatment programs lasting more than 30 days.
Successful recovery from addiction begins by working with a rehab facility that treats the whole individual, not just the disease. Holistic rehab is designed to root out the cause of drug addiction or alcoholism—which often includes a dual diagnosis – so an individual can work toward healing and lifelong recovery—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
